A Museum designed to provide inspiration for coming generations.

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) is a combined art museum, repertory movie theater and archive associated with the University of California, Berkeley. A cultural centerpiece for downtown Berkley, the design provides serene spaces for viewing film and dynamic public spaces. The Project integrates the existing 48,000 SF UC Berkeley printing press with a new 35,000 SF build-on. The completed space totals 83,000 SF. Public spaces include 25,000 SF of gallery space, two film-theaters, a performance forum, four study centers, a reading room, art lab, a café, and an outdoor plaza.

Designed to be a new downtown social hub, the Project merges the 1930s Art Deco-style of the original building with a contemporary precision-formed stainless-steel shell. Strategically placed windows were preserved and enlarged for visibility and light and some of the wood from the original structure, made of Canary Island pine trees, was able to be preserved and repurposed. This space was designed to provide inspiration for coming generations.
